A Chance Meeting
It started on a Kalamazoo street corner in 1994, when Janene met Erfan — a native of Tanzania with a love for adventure. That meeting led to a marriage that bridged cultures and continents. On their honeymoon safari, Janene finally experienced the landscapes she had long dreamed of: galloping giraffes on the Serengeti, sunsets that lit the sky with volcanic reds, and the warm hospitality of Tanzania’s people. It was the beginning of a lifelong passion to share these wonders with others.

Years later, Janene and Erfan promised friends and family they’d take them to see the beauty of Tanzania. When 28 people signed on for the adventure, the couple discovered that most safari operators weren’t interested in tailoring a trip to their group’s vision. So they built their own — partnering with trusted local professionals to deliver the experience they’d always dreamed of. That trip became the blueprint for Kalamazoo Safari: personalized, thoughtful, and deeply connected to the people and places of East Africa.
